Getting started

Who can use StudyLane?

Anyone with a UCLA email address (including addresses like g.ucla.edu) can create an account. Each study sets its own eligibility, including age. For course-credit studies you also need your UCLA UID and a course that uses StudyLane this quarter.

If you’re under 18, use StudyLane in line with UCLA’s policies for students under 18. Some studies need a parent’s permission before you can take part; the research team will tell you.

Why do I need a UCLA email, and what if my verification email doesn’t arrive?

StudyLane is for the UCLA community, so participant accounts only accept UCLA addresses. You confirm yours by opening the link we send to your UCLA inbox.

If it hasn’t arrived, check your junk folder, then go to Verify your email and select Resend verification email (one email a minute). If it still doesn’t come, email support@studylane.org.

I forgot my password. How do I reset it?

On the sign-in page, select Forgot password?, enter your UCLA email and select Send reset link. Open the emailed link, then choose a new password. Or go straight to Reset your password.

If you’re signed in, you can change it from Account settings with Change password.

Finding and booking studies

How do I find studies I’m eligible for?

Studies only shows studies you can join: Paid studies for paid ones, Course credit for the ones your course accepts. Studies whose requirements your answers don’t meet are hidden, so finishing the prescreen and adding your school and major in Account settings can show you more.

Use Search studies, Filters and Sort to narrow the list.

What is the prescreen, and who sees my answers?

The prescreen is a set of questions StudyLane uses to show you only the studies you qualify for. About you is required once before you see studies, and every question except date of birth has “Prefer not to say”. Your course-credit pool may add optional questions.

Research teams never see your answers. They only see roughly how many students fit their rules. You can update your answers, or select Delete my prescreen answers, on the Prescreen page.

How do I book a time, and where do I see my bookings?

Open a study, pick a time under Book an appointment, then select Book appointment. For a study with several visits, you pick a time for each.

Your bookings are under Registered: paid bookings on Paid studies, course-credit bookings on Course credit. Each study’s page shows your appointment, the location or Zoom link, and your cancellation deadline.

How do I cancel or change a time, and is there a deadline?

Open the study and select Cancel registration. The page shows your deadline as “Cancel by” a date and time. Each study sets its own, and for course credit it’s usually 24 hours before.

There’s no reschedule button: cancel, then book a new time if one is open. After the deadline, use the research team contact on the study page.

Some studies have several visits. How does that work?

A study can have up to four visits, and you book them together, choosing a time for each in order. Cancelling cancels every visit, and if you miss a visit, your later visits are released.

For course credit, some visits may be online surveys that open a set number of days after the visit before, and credit is awarded after the final visit.

How do I check in when I arrive?

If the research team shows a QR code, scan it with your phone, sign in and select Record attendance. It only works while your appointment is happening. If there’s no QR code, the research team records your attendance.

For Zoom appointments, use Join Zoom on the study page. It opens 5 minutes before the start.

How do saved studies work?

Select the bookmark on a paid study to save it, and find it later under Saved. Saving doesn’t hold a spot, and studies that close or fill up are marked Closed or No open times. Course-credit studies can’t be saved.

Course credit

How do I make sure credit goes to the right course?

On Course credit, choose your course and select Confirm course before the date shown. You can change it until then.

If you take more than one course, use Add course, then pick the course under Credit for when you book. After you book, select Change next to the credit line to move that study to another course that accepts it. Once course selection closes, use Request a course correction.

When does my credit show up, and where can I see it?

Credit shows up once the research team confirms you took part, and some online surveys award it as soon as you finish. If the team hasn’t recorded an in-person or Zoom appointment within 7 days, credit is awarded automatically.

Your total is at the top of Course credit, finished studies are under Completed, and Credit summary has the full record. You also get an email when credit is first awarded, unless you turn that off.

What happens if I miss an appointment (no-show)?

The research team marks it as missed, you don’t get credit for it, and any later visits are released.

For course credit, missed studies count toward your pool’s limit for the quarter (3 unless your pool sets another number). When you reach it, new sign-ups pause until next quarter, and some pools also take a little credit off for each one. If you had a good reason, contact the research team: they can excuse it.

I finished an online study but don’t see credit. What do I do?

Always start the survey from Open survey on the study page, so StudyLane can match it to you. If the page shows I’ve finished the survey, select it. If it says Waiting for the research team to confirm, the team still has to review it.

For anything else, contact the research team from the study page before the date under Complete by.

Payment

Who pays me for a paid study, and when?

The research team pays you, not StudyLane, and each study decides how and when. The amount is on the study page, so check the details with the team using the contact listed there.

Lab positions

How do I apply for a lab position, and how do I track my application?

Go to Lab positions, open a position and select Apply (some labs send you to their own site instead). Fill in your profile, add a CV if you like, answer the lab’s questions and select Submit application.

Track them under My applications, where each shows a status like Being reviewed, Invited to interview or Offer received. You can have up to 10 applications in progress.

What’s in my application profile, and who sees my CV?

Your application profile has your year, expected graduation, weekly hours, courses, experience, skills, languages and research interests.

A lab sees your profile and CV only when you apply to it, and you can choose not to send a CV. Labs never see your prescreen answers, UCLA UID, the studies you’ve joined or your credit.

Your account

How do I change which emails I get?

Under Email preferences in Account settings, switch reminders, credit emails, study invitations and the paid-study digest on or off. Changes save right away. Account, security and booking emails are always sent.

To change the UCLA email on your account, email support@studylane.org.

How do I delete my account, and what happens to my data?

In Account settings, select Delete account, enter your password and select Delete permanently. This can’t be undone.

It deletes your profile, saved studies, prescreen answers and lab applications, and cancels upcoming appointments. Course credit you’ve earned stays on record so your instructor can confirm it. The Privacy Policy has the details.
