Accessibility

Last updated: October 12, 2026

StudyLane should work for everyone in the UCLA community, including people who use a keyboard instead of a mouse, a screen reader, magnification, or other assistive technology.

Our target

StudyLane aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA for every page participants, researchers, and administrators use.

StudyLane has not yet had an independent accessibility audit. This statement describes our own testing.

How we test

  • Automated checks: we run axe-core against the WCAG 2.0 and 2.1 Level A and AA rules on about 700 participant, researcher, and administrator pages and page states, including dialogs, menus, and error messages, at desktop and phone widths. Where a tool cannot judge text contrast, such as text on a gradient, we measure it from the rendered page.
  • Keyboard testing: we check that menus, dialogs, appointment and date pickers, tabs, and search suggestions work with the keyboard alone, that focus is always visible, and that closing a dialog returns focus to where you were.
  • Zoom and spacing: we check that pages fit a 320-pixel-wide window without scrolling sideways, and that no text is cut off when letter, word, and line spacing are increased.
  • Code checks: accessibility lint rules are part of the checks we run on the site's code.
  • These checks were last run on October 12, 2026.

Known limitations

Automated tools find only some accessibility problems, so these are the gaps we know about:

  • We have not yet completed testing with screen readers such as VoiceOver, NVDA, or JAWS, or with speech recognition and screen magnification software.
  • Wide tables, such as participant rosters, scroll sideways inside the page on small screens.
  • Study analytics charts show trends visually. The same numbers are available as a table on the page.
  • Course-credit reports and the participant lists research teams download are CSV files. How accessible they are depends on the spreadsheet program you open them in.

Content from other services

Some parts of taking part in a study happen outside StudyLane, and we cannot control their accessibility:

  • Surveys, screeners, and study tasks that research teams host on other services, such as Qualtrics, Google Forms, or a lab's own website;
  • Video calls for online sessions, such as Zoom;
  • Google Calendar, if you connect it, and the calendar app you use for appointment invitations; and
  • Study descriptions, consent forms, and other documents that research teams write or link to.

Report a problem

If something on StudyLane is hard or impossible to use with your setup, email support@studylane.org. It helps to include the page address, what you were trying to do, and the browser and any assistive technology you use.

We aim to reply within 3 business days. If a barrier stops you from signing up for a study, keeping an appointment, or getting course credit, say so and we will work with you and the research team on another way to take part while we fix it.
